Company racehorse Richardofdoccombe is due to run in the 3.20 at Taunton on Saturday. Unfortunately, it’s not on Channel 4, but if you have Sky or similar it will be shown by ATR (At The Races).
Is he worth a bet? Probably – yes. Will he win? We simply don’t know, but whether to have a bet or not is more a question of value. This is his first run over chase fences and – even though he won over hurdles - chasing should be his proper sphere. The pro’s are that, due to being from a small stable, he’ll likely be a bigger price than he should, so that’s immediate value. Also, we know he’s very well at home and that he’s a real athlete and an enthusiastic jumper; he should also handle the very soft ground. There are two possible con’s. The distance of 2 miles may mean things happen too quickly for him, as I suspect he’s going to end up being a 2 1/2 – 3 mile horse (although this will be somewhat countered by the very soft ground, resulting in a slower pace). Secondly, this is his first run on a racecourse over the big fences. Some horses take to it straight away, others need a couple of runs while they gain experience. Even though he’s spectacular when schooling at home, I simply can’t predict what will happen - or what sort of experience - he will have in the race. He may do nothing, but he may well ‘pop up’ just as he did at Newton Abbot in May. It wouldn’t surprise me.
We're going to have a bet on him, but we won’t be going wild.
