Company racehorse Richardofdoccombe turns out quickly in the 2pm Wincanton today. When he pulled-up in his first two races at Ffos Las he stopped like he’d been shot and something was obviously wrong, which made him impossible to tip at Newton Abbot when he won. I only backed him that day because he is such a good looking, athletic horse, so I kept the faith; but it was difficult to suggest anyone else to do the same.
So he needs to bounce back in a similar fashion today and I simply don’t have a clue. But while he ran with no promise in those two Ffos Las races, he did show plenty of promise at Taunton recently, jumping well and lying very easily up with the pace; however, once again, he bottomed out very quickly, so it’s a leap of faith that he’ll finish the race today. Having said that, he had excuses, very heavy ground in his first run for 8 months and racing far too exuberantly, so much so that he would have used up a lot of petrol, making it very hard to get home in that ground.
Although he appears to handle it, maybe he doesn’t really like this heavy Winter ground (Summer soft ground is very different) but the way he stops so quickly, having apparently been going well, does make me wonder whether he has a breathing problem. He doesn’t make noises or give any other indicators of this, but it is something we’ll have to investigate if it happens again today.
Nevertheless, 25-1 (his odds today) is far too big. So, while he’s not exactly fancied, with only four runners and and improved performance hoped for, he’s got to be worth a small bet at these odds.
